Mission: The State Veterinary Laboratories’ mission is the State and its citizens’ assurance for reliable and qualitative examinations of samples derived from animals or food of animal origin for diseases with impact on the agricultural economy, the Public Health, and the Animal Health and Welfare, in certain time bounds.
Objective: The implementation of particular Programmes in cooperation with the rest of the Sections and Divisions of the Veterinary Services. These Programmes are constantly reviewed to cover new rising subjects according to the requirements of the environment and are designed to comply with the current European Union strategies and the economical and agricultural needs of Cyprus.
Research Services provided: The State Veterinary Laboratories are the following:
(I) Laboratory for Animal Health
(1) Pathology Bacterilogy & Parasitology Laboratory (PBPL)
- Services:
o Animal Necropsies and Laboratory diagnostic testing for Bacterial, Parasitic & metabolic diseases.
o Analyzes of Production Animal feed Samples for detection of animal proteins
- Main equipment used:
o Post Mortem Examination Table Kugel, Incubators, Centrifuges, PH meter, Microscopes, Stereoscopes, RT-PCR thermocycler, Automatic System for Bacterial Identification VITEK
(2) Virology Laborator (VLab)
- Services:
o Laboratory diagnostic testing for viral infections
o Monitoring and evaluation of specific post-infection and post-vaccination immunity
o Services in the prevention of viral diseases

o Refrigerators, freezers, incubators, autoclaves, dry air oven, centrifuges, balance, waterbath, microscopes, safety cabinets, washers, readers, Ultrapure water system, Roche Magna Pure LC robot, Spectrophotometer, RT-PCR thermocycler, Tissuelyser, ELISA and IFA automated platform
(3) Bacteriology Serology (BSL)

o Laboratory examination of samples

(4) Transmissible Spongiform (TSE’s Laboratory)
- Services:
o Laboratory examination of brain and whole blood samples for the presence of prions and PrP genotyping, accordingly

(5) Histopathology Laboratory (EIST Laboratory)

o Laboratory examination of animal tissues for the presence of animal diseases.

o Work station for histopathology examination, Tissue Processors, Tissue embedding cassette systems, Rotaition Microtome, Microscopes, Automatic Slide Stainer, Refrigerators, Slide Drying hot plates, Sequenza immunostaining center, Freezers, Incubator, Autoclave, Safety cabinet, Stirrers, PHmeter, Waterbath, Balance, Water Still.
(II) Laboratory for the Control of Food of Animal Origin

- Parasitological tests on fish and detection of Trichinella in meat samples
- Detection of Staphylococcal enterotoxins types SEA to SEE in all food matrices
- Determination of aflatoxin M1 in milk and its products.
- Tests concerning the quality of milk and milk products (fat, protein, lactose, total solids and control of the addition of water to the milk)
